First made popular on Instagram by Italian model Valentina Fradegrada in 2018, it seems the trend of the “upside down” bikini has seen a resurgence of late. It’s rather risqué, involving tying the halter neck straps across the chest to pull the triangle material further apart than usual. Now it seems no one cares about the correct way of wearing the top, if you’re not wearing it upside down you’re wearing it wrong.
The result of this is basically some in-your-face cleavage and while we’re all for celebrating what you got, it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted. Kourtney Kardashian nearly broke the internet with her snap of her posing in a red bikini from Aussie swimwear brand Sommer Swim. The 41-year-old was shown wearing the $168 two-piece, which led to the bikini selling out almost immediately, others who have braved the look include Tammy Hebrew and former reality star Martha Kalifatidis.
But is it just an attempt to recreate what the influencers are making cool, or is there more to this trend? Some suggest it’s an attempt to be more sustainable and conscious of our purchases, believing wearers are trying to find news ways to style old bikinis and make them “new” again. While we can’t be sure it’s this that everyone is striving for by taking up the trend, if it means we’re rethinking our purchases and making the most of what we’ve got then, yeah, consider us fans.
