Many tennis greats have taken to Twitter this morning to express their disappointment, with some facing the realisation they may never play on London’s prestigious grass courts again.
“Definitely a tough one to take with the announcement of the cancellation of Wimbledon this year,” wrote two-time Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova. “Not only is it a special tournament to me, but it’s a tournament that has been part of history for so long that it will leave a big hole in the calendar. I will miss playing on the beautiful grass and wearing my white, BUT of course we know it will be back better than ever next year. And maybe we will all appreciate it even more!”
“Obviously heartbroken losing the championships at Wimbledon this year,” added Aussie Pat Cash. “I’m saddened as the club supports hundreds of desperate local charities with the profits. Players are adaptable that’s a strength as pros it’s the small people on the fringes who are really hurting right now."
Roger Federer simply wrote, “devastated" while Serena Williams summed up our thoughts entirely, posting: “I’m shooked.”
The French Open has also been postponed until September 20th, which will make it the last grand slam of the calendar year.
