The reality? Most celebrities are doing the selfie without the key piece of equipment - the mirror. As it turns out, these people are instead setting their cameras up on tripods, or taking a self-timed photo of them posing like they’re taking a selfie in a mirror, leading to what one can only describe as selfie deception. They even hold the phone up in an attempt to make the image more realistic.
TikTok creator @karajewel exposed the travesty on her channel, even going so far as to claim that she’s been doing it for ages. Trust us, once you see it, you can’t unseen it. How we were duped for so long is beyond us, especially when you consider the fact that any time we attempted the mirror selfie, it would be covered in smudges and various other details that only go so far as to show the lack of cleanliness of our bathrooms.
As TikTok creator @katathomedoingnothing said in a video where she discusses the fictitious nature of our favourite social media personalities, “You know when you see a picture or mirror selfie of someone on Instagram and you’re like, wow, how is their mirror so clean? It’s because they just have a different camera. It’s not a mirror.”
“None of the influencers have mirrors, they just have other cameras.”
It’s hilarious, really. The whole idea of the mirror selfie is the suggestion that it’s casual, off-hand, something taken quickly in a bid for authenticity. But now that we know such things aren’t taken at a mirror at all, but are actually highly-staged, it once again just demonstrates the nature of Instagram as a platform that only celebrates perfection.
