Meet the robot vacuum
Powered by a full suite of smart sensors that automatically guide the robot around your home, these newish devices do exactly that: the work for you. So why the heck didn't I get one ages ago? Well, for three reasons:
1. I assumed they were just too expensive.
2. Didn't think they would do as good of a job as normal vacuumed.
3. Way too high tech for me (and way too easy for my daughter to break).
And sure, while some of these points remained to be true to some extent, it didn't matter. Because when I started using the DEEBOT N8 PRO, I joined a club - the robot vacuum club. And it was the best day of my life. Here's why:
It knows where to go
The device that I tried, the DEEBOT N8 PRO, uses TrueDetect 3D technology, which means can instantly detect and avoid obstacles. While you do have to pick up any loose cables or anything that might get stuck in the device, what that means is that you can basically turn it on and leave. Not only will the device vacuum everywhere (or the areas you have set up in your app), but when it's done it will find its way back to the charging dock and start charging all by itself.
After I make breakfast and prep lunches for the family, it's the last thing I do before I leave the house for work.
Up there with the things I hate to do - right next to vacuuming - is mopping. While it does require a small setup (clipping in the mopping attachment and filling the device up with water), this is a game changer at my house. With a one-year-old, food is constantly being thrown on the floor, and while spray and wipe gets the food off, we all know it never truly feels clean without a good mop.
While I still do my fortnightly deep mop with my trusty mop-and-bucket, I use this feature WAY more than I thought I would to give the floor a nice big wipe every few days.
It makes me feel good
If you're like me and get triggered by a messy/dirty house, I can't begin to explain just how good my robot vac makes me feel. When I come home to a freshly-vacuumed (and mopped!) house after a long day it's honestly the best. It's absolutely not difficult at all to use (concern number three ticked-off), and the handy on/off switch at the bottom of the device means that even when my daughter gets a little too interested she can't break it by turning it on and off every 5 seconds. Nice.
It does an impressive job
My house is mainly timber flooring with carpet in the bedrooms, and when I say I'm impressed with the suction - I mean it. The DEEBOT N8 PRO claims to be able to remove 99.26% of bacteria, and is able to differentiate between surfaces which means it can intelligently avoid carpets when mopping and double suction power while vacuuming. It also has a nifty detection system that stops it from taking a tumble down stairs or over ledges.
As for the price, $799 is absolutely an investment and understandably expensive for most people. But for me, the time and stress that it takes out of my life is absolutely worth it (and if you're lucky, you can snatch it on sale - just keep an eye out!).
The DEEBOT N8 PRO is available at JB Hi-Fi, Godfreys Vacuums and The Good Guys.
