I have something to tell you all. It’s a bit of a shocker so are you sitting down? Okay good. I want to let you in on an insider secret… scales don’t determine how far we’ve come in our health and fitness journey, they don’t determine progress or worth.
Turns out you don’t actually have to live your life by that little number on the screen ‘cos they’re not nearly as accurate as you take them for! I get that it’s both important and exciting to track your progress, but it’s important you find an honest and true way to reflect your amazing efforts.
The best way to reset your mind on weight loss is to just completely re-SET. This is not a diet, this is not a bootcamp. You are having a lifestyle overhaul, a transformation to make life long changes that will stick.
I exercise to have energy and feel good, not to lose weight. I eat to fuel my body, not to deprive it. And I love and accept my body, even its so-called ‘flaws’ because they make it unique. I have loved watching my body grow stronger with the arrival of Arnie and every day is a new adventure. Health is more than weight, size or shape - it’s about how you feel. My online program tiffxo.com also explores mindfulness and other techniques to make sure you feel good inside, as much as the outside.
VERY FIRST THING
Go and get those scales and throw them right where they belong - the rubbish! Your weight fluctuates due to hormones, weather and water and doesn’t tell an honest story anyway. Your sass is not measured by the scales - so you really have no need for them. I focus on how I feel, not how I look or how much I weigh. I have more energy, I’m less moody, and I can think clearly. These things are worth more to me than any number.
Focus on the FIT not the FAT
Weight is arbitrary because as you train, you will gain lean sexy muscle and your body composition will change. You may not lose weight (on the scales), but your jeans will become baggy! If you focus on fitness goals, you will feel great, strong, empowered and reap the benefits which are glowing skin, more energy, weight loss and body sculpting. In the process you will take your mind out of living for a number and instead, live according to how you feel. It should feel great to look good.
Embrace the NSVs (non scale victories)
Set yourself small achievable goals. Something that is not necessarily in your big goal list but something worth noting. Going up on those belt loop notches? Smashing out your 2L water goal? All excellent NSVs! Celebrating your shorter term goals will help keep you motivated with those longer term goals.
Practice and live mindfully
A happy mind equals a happy body. It’s time you reconnect with your body and your mind. It’s amazing the relationship between our physical health and our brains and what we can achieve. Make sure you carve out some “me minutes”, learn some meditation practices and be fully present in your own thoughts.
Remember to be kind to yourself on this journey. Give yourself a kiss and a hug at every NSV and goal achieved. Changing the way you treat yourself and your body isn’t easy. Give yourself time, rest and make sure you have some fun along the way.
