I confess I’m annoying to go on holiday with because I love having more time to exercise uninterrupted. But I totally get it. You may think there are two kinds of people in the world, those that workout on holiday and those that don’t. Just because you’re in a new destination, it doesn’t mean you need to take a break from your fitness goals too. If you’ve been working hard to get fit, a holiday can set you right back where you started. Now, I’m not saying you have to run 10km every day, but there are simple ways to incorporate movement and keep active during the day and they won’t interrupt your holiday mojo! In fact, you won’t even realise you’re exercising at all!
1. Try Cooling off
I love swimming! It's a great, low-intensity activity that is fantastic for recovering muscles and preventing injury. It’s also the perfect way to cool down in the warmer weather. Selecting a holiday rental with a pool or located close to the beach is really important to me and my family – splashing around the pool or ocean is a great way to keep active without even thinking about it.
A tennis game can earn you up to 4000 steps, find a nearby tennis court.
3. Child’s play
Playing with the kids is a great way to increase your step count - treasure hunts, playing hide and seek, throwing a frisbee around the back yard or beach or even cricket – your options are endless.
4. See the sights
Be adventurous and see the sights. Explore your local surroundings, get active and embrace the scenery. If you usually do yoga inside, do it by the pool and take in the fresh air.
Don’t feel like being couped up with the dumbbells in a gym on holiday? Lucky your body is an excellent gym. Nothing beats a few body weight exercises such as walking lunges, squats, push-ups, dips and burpees.
Finally, if you’re travelling with friends or family, instead of coffee or lunch, take in your new surroundings and walk and talk. Adding steps to your day will burn calories, maintain fitness and keep your health goals on goals.
