This Is Why You Might Feel Dizzy After Sex

by | Apr 9, 2021

It’s meant to be one of life’s greatest pleasures, but if you’ve ever experienced a mind-blowing orgasm or enjoyed a very sweaty, sticky romp, you might have been met with a feeling of lightheadedness or even nausea. Safe to say, it’s not the greatest feeling when you’re in the throes of passion. But as it turns out, this feeling of dizziness isn’t so uncommon.

According to a board-certified ob-gyn in New York, the culprit is likely a spike or drop in blood pressure. Denise Moses, MD, FACOG, told Popsugar that standing or suddenly changing positions during sex – from lying down to being on top – can affect blood flow to different areas of the body, altering your blood pressure. Even vertigo could be a cause for dizziness.

As Dr Moses explained to the publication, “Vertigo is a sensation that the room is spinning, or that there is a sense of swaying or tilting.” This experience can worsen when you’ve been messing around in bed, as your breathing becomes rapid, particularly during orgasm.

So, why is it so important to know this anyway? Well, if you’ve ever clutched at your heart or head during or after sex as these feelings arise, it could feel quite terrifying, especially when you feel as though there’s a disconnect between body and mind. But as Dr. Moses suggests, these causes of dizziness during or after sex aren’t cause for concern, but can even be a common side effect from exercise, too.

If you notice yourself feeling dizzy, Dr. Moses suggests sitting up slowly, taking some sips of water, and eating something easy on the stomach, like crackers. That said, if feelings of dizziness or lightheadedness are recurrent or you’re concerned it could be a sign of something more significant, it’s best to talk to your doctor.
