The Department of Health is warning those with respiratory conditions like asthma or emphysema to stay indoors and avoid exertion. Risks for most people are minor, but symptoms may include sore eyes and sore throats.
Complicating matters, the National Asthma Council Australia has forecast Thursday's pollen count as 'extreme'.
The smoke is spreading from the out-of-control Gospers Mountain fire, which has burnt more than 146,000 hectares north-west of Sydney. As of last night there still 50 fires are burning across New South Wales, with 25 of those blazes uncontained.
What can you do to protect yourself from smoke?
- Stay indoors
- Close windows and doors
- Refrain from exertion and vigorous exercise
- Cover your nose and mouth with a mask designed to filter fine particles, you can pick one up from most hardware stores
