We can always relay on James Corden’s carpool karaoke to provide us with hilarious entertainment, bellyaching laughs and some killer tunes.

But when Selena Gomez joined the comedian we got a health tip thrown in there, too.

In the midst of blasting out songs and an unexpected roller coaster ride, Gomez explained she starts her day with ginger.

“Is it true that you drink a shot of ginger every morning?” Corden asked.

“I like ginger shots, yes. But I actually like to eat a piece of ginger every morning,” Selena admitted.

“Doesn’t it burn your throat?”

“It’s a good burn,” she assured him.

And then her and Corden shot down a mini bottle of ginger juice.

It was certainly evident in her reaction that she’s an avid drinker of the herb, as she shot her drink down with a smile. As for Corden’s inability to speak for a few seconds and a coughing fit, it’s safe to say this was probably his first time.

Selena explained you should begin your day with ginger, because “It’s killing all the bad things inside,” and she’s not wrong. Ginger is known for it’s anti-inflammatory and anti-viral qualities, believed to relieve the symptoms of a cold or sore throat. It’s also an excellent choice for any nausea and indigestion, and is ideal made as a tea for travel sickness.

So as we settle into flu season, take a note out of Selena’s book and incorporate the herb into your morning routine. If eating a raw slice of ginger seems a little too much, simply add some into your smoothie, juice or tea.
