If you meet someone who hasn’t felt insecure about their body, consider them a unicorn and chuck them in the Smithsonian. It’s natural to focus on things that others don’t see – especially when tagged in an unflattering shot online. But as Sarah Hyland knows, it’s all about perspective.

Earlier this week, the 28-year-old shared a paparazzi photo to Instagram, showing her wearing a sports bra and her stomach fully exposed. For those not in the know, she’s been battling a condition called kidney dysplasia, which has resulted in her having 16 surgeries throughout her lifetime (including two kidney transplants).

“To my fellow #invisibleillnesswarriors. It’s ok to be insecure about your body. Just remember to check in with yourself at least once a day and say thank you,” she captioned it.

“Our bodies have endured unfathomable feats that our minds barely have time to comprehend what has happened. With inflammation, excess water gain and medications, my skin has a hard time bouncing back.”

Her health journey has taught her to appreciate the things she likes about herself, rather than always dwelling on the bad.

“I saw this pic and I HATED it but quickly readjusted my attitude and decided to celebrate it.”

As for her message to others who may be feeling down about their body? “Love yourself and be patient.”

“We are all stronger than we think we are,” she added.

Clearly, it was a message her followers needed to hear as hundreds weighed in with words of support:

“Yes! Real bodies that battle everyday are beautiful. Love that you posted this,” one person wrote.

“Thank you for reminding me this,” added another.
