If coloured stones aren’t exactly your bag, there's another engagement ring option that looks just as expensive as any celebrity diamond ring, save the exorbitant price tag.
Introducing salt and pepper diamonds – the engagement ring trend that is set to take the world by storm. Put simply, salt and pepper diamonds are imperfect diamonds with black and white ‘flaw’s or ‘inclusions.’
The diamonds begin the same way all diamonds do, as bits of carbon squished into a solid diamond form by extreme heat and pressure. Unlike high-clarity diamonds, salt and pepper diamonds have what the industry refers to as ‘inclusions’, in this case, the black and white specks, which determine the stone’s clarity.
Similarly, to any other diamond, no two salt and pepper diamonds are the same – adding to their allure. The diamonds can vary from being near white, slightly speckled or light grey, to a cloud grey, marbled or near black. The more ‘flawed’, the more salt and peppery it’ll look.
When it comes to costs, brides and grooms can save big by opting for a salt and pepper diamond considering they are technically lower in quality; as dictated by the four Cs (cut, colour, clarity and carat).
But if the uniqueness of a salt and pepper diamond is more important than the clarity, the good news is that they’re certainly more affordable than traditional diamonds – depending on the size of the stone, of course.
