Ryan Reynolds On Parenting And Being ‘Terrified’ At The Idea Of Having A Son

“We love having our girls.”

Hollywood has produced many a golden couple over the years, from the likes of Brad and Angelina, to George Clooney and Amal, Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. But while many a celebrity romance seem to fade quicker than the sparks that once ignited them, the pairing of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds is one we will forever stan. Theirs is a relationship we can only admire and strive for; it’s one of public roastings on social media, hilarious quips, but ultimately, a firm understanding that these two have it, theirs is the good stuff and we’re all just lucky to live in a time where we can at least bask in the glory of their love.

But while the pair remain relatively private when it comes to discussion around their children, with Blake having recently expressed her concern with the paparazzi’s obsession with documenting young children of celebrities, Reynolds has opened up about what it’s like being a parent and one that’s come to be known as a ‘girl dad’. The actor told Access that he was “quietly terrified” that his third child – two-year-old Betty – would be a boy. While he did turn out to be wrong, with the couple welcoming their third daughter to six-year-old James and five-year-old Inez, for Reynolds it was something of a welcome relief.

“I would not have it any other way” said Reynolds. “When we had our youngest, I was quietly terrified it was gonna be a boy because I didn’t know, we didn’t know. I didn’t know anything but girls. I grew up with boys, and I was constantly being thrown through walls when there was a perfectly good door five feet away.”

Recently doing the promotion for his new film Red Notice, Reynolds also noted that it was being a dad to daughters that helped strengthen his relationship with costars Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot, who also have three little girls with their respective partners. “We talk a lot about that, and there is a sort of shared experience there that I think is worth noting,” he told Access. “We love having our girls.”

But while Reynolds jokes about the terror of having a son, the reality of being a father to three girls was one he never would have expected a few years ago, admitting that there was a time he “never in a million years would have imagined” raising all girls. “I come from all boys. I have three older brothers. I’m the youngest of four boys, so for me to have three daughters has been such a ride,” he told Access in November of 2020. “I love every second of it.”

As for the secret to his and Blake’s happy marriage, Reynolds admits that when it comes to parenting the pair remain a strong and committed team. “I just try to be as present as possible,” he told the publication. “We don’t split up. Like, I shoot movies and my wife shoots movies and we go travel all over the place, and we just all go together. I think that’s been the best part of it is that we really don’t spend a lot of time apart. I get to spend a lot of time with my girls.”

A whirlwind past few years with blockbusters like Deadpool and Free Guy, Reynolds has been busy juggling work and parenting. But just recently, the actor announced he would be taking a break from acting to focus on parenting. “We all want to be together during this time. Our kids are quite young, and I don’t want to miss it.”
