Rollerblading is the Fun Workout You Need to Try This Summer

You see those women out on bike paths and sidewalks cruising in their rollerskates. It looks effortless—but is it really? Can you work up a sweat and heavy breathing while gliding on skates? If you loved skating as a kid, or have just always wanted to give it a go, you’ll be happy to know that yes, it can be a great cardio and strength-building workout.

And it’s a solid option for people who don’t want to put as much stress on their joints as they would running or want to add something new to their workout program. Just keep in mind, it just shouldn’t be your only source of cardio: the repetitive motion of skating can be irritating if you have tight hips and the slightly bent over position isn’t ideal for you body’s alignment.

Skating is so much fun, the bonus is that it’s also a great full body workout – you can definitely work up a sweat. Skating helps build core strength, tone and stamina.

What are some ways to safely and effectively add skating to your sweat sessions?

If you’re a beginner or trying new tricks, always wear protective gear and warm up before you really push it, to keep you safe from injury. Getting lessons from a professional is always a good idea – you can do outdoor classes, one on one sessions, or head to your local skate rink who offer lessons. If you’re skating out and about, always observe road rules, stay alert and avoid high-traffic areas. 

What are your 5 best tips for roller skating?

1. Check your skates each time you head out – check your toe stops, wheels and trucks – if they are too loose, tighten them with the appropriate tool. You can use a skate tool, or if you don’t have one – a screwdriver and spanner will do. 

2. Make sure to correctly fasten your laces and ensure your skates are not loose around your foot. If you notice movement of your feet in the skates, you should adjust the laces.

3. Express yourself with what you wear, the music you listen to and the attitude you bring to it. It’s not just about getting from A to B, it’s about how creatively you do just that.

4. Make it social! Skate with your friends IRL or share your adventures. It’s all about your squad!

5. Don’t take it too seriously, whatever your skill level – skating is a fun, inclusive and welcoming community that is encouraging of everyone.
