Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have made a bit of a habit out of breaking royal traditions over the course of their relationship, and the arrival of their firstborn was no different.

The Duchess of Sussex gave birth to a healthy baby boy at their home at Frogmore Cottage (their newest residence in Windsor). The littlest royal was welcomed to the world on May 6 weighing seven pounds and three ounces.

Watch Prince Harry’s moving announcement…

Buckingham Palace issued a statement on Monday announcing that Meghan had gone into “labour in the early hours of this morning.” They added that Prince Harry was by Meghan’s side during the delivery, along with her mother Doria Ragland.

Seeing Meghan is new to motherhood (and her pregnancy was considered high-risk), the decision to have a home birth is one that’s come as a surprise to many. In addition, the couple passed up the infamous Lindo Wing photo op and as Harry, William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis were all snapped on the iconic steps as youngsters, this is kind of a big deal.

Instead, Harry has announced that they will release photos of the newborn over the next few days.

“It’s been the most amazing experience I can ever have possibly imagined,” he told reporters. “How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension. But, we’re both absolutely thrilled. And so grateful to all the love and support from everybody out there. It’s been amazing. So we just wanted to share this with everybody.”

When asked about the name they’d chosen, he added: “The baby’s a little bit overdue so we’ve had a little bit of time to think about it. That’s the next bit.”

He ended the interview praising Meghan and saying their baby boy is “to die for.”

“I haven’t been in many births. This is definitely my first birth,” he said. “But it was amazing. Absolutely incredible. And, as I said, I’m so incredibly proud of my wife. And, as every father and parent would ever say, your baby’s absolutely amazing, but this little thing is absolutely to die for. So I’m just over the moon.”
