People Are Freaking Out About How Small Kim Kardashian’s Waist Looked In Her Met Gala Dress
By WH Staff | May 8, 2019
Kim Kardashian West is no stranger to jaw-dropping red carpet looks, but her Met Gala look yesterday (a nude Thierry Mugler gown) went above and beyond—particularly in regards to how especially tiny her waist looked.
Obviously, Kim’s known for her hourglass figure (and the fact that she crushes it in the gym daily), so her super cinched-in waist shouldn’t come as a total surprise, but many Met Gala spectators took to social media to comment on what appeared to be Kim’s lack of internal organs and ribs, and questioned whether her teeny-tiny waist was even real.
Her badass trainer, Melissa Alcantara, was there to back her up. She posted a photo of Kim from the gala on her Instagram Stories in defence of her famous client. “To make things clear,” Alcantara wrote, “1. This dress is corseted BUT 2. Kim trains her ass off 6 days a f*cking week, she wakes up early AF and is dedicated. 3. I paved the road for her but SHE did the work! I love compliments either way. MOST IMPORTANTLY I don’t give a shit about your opinions on her body, if you think [it’s] fake or not! I see her every morning, I see her train and I see her sweat and I see all the work she does outside the gym and THAT is commendable!”
It’s true that Kim makes fitness a big priority in her life, getting up at 6 a.m. six days a week to fit in strength workouts with Alcantara. But it’s still important to note that, as Alcantara said, her look is corseted, meaning she’s wearing some kind of shapewear to achieve it, and it’s not a look anyone should expect their body to have on its own.
As far as the tightness of Kim’s corset goes (because it looks damn snug—IDK how she was even able to breathe in that thing), wearing extremely tight shapewear corsets or waist trainers isn’t necessarily recommended from a medical standpoint—even for a few hours.
Super-tight corsets can “push the stomach beyond the diaphragm, causing reflux and interfering with breathing, and they can damage the ribs” says Caroline Apovian, MD, director of nutrition and weight management at the Boston Medical Center. They can also put unwanted pressure on your midsection, which limits the blood and oxygen flow to your vital organs. Yikes.
Ultimately, it’s Kim’s choice if she wants to wear a corset for a super-duper cinched waist look for an extravagant occasion like the Met Gala. Yes, she looks beautiful and works hard in the gym, but it’s also important to remember that she’s getting some help from some pretty extreme shapewear for this hourglass figure in these looks—and that may not be the healthiest or safest route.
