Aside from home and the office, it’s a safe bet you spend the majority of your time at the gym. But can we talk about incidental exercise for a quick sec? Jessica Simpson is living proof that every bit of effort counts when trying to kick extra kilos to the curb. (Reminder: she lost 45kg of baby weight in six months.) In fact, her trainer Harley Pasternak reckons upping her step count was a major contributor to how fast she saw results.

“My clients, before they go to bed at night, send me an email and it says, Did you hit your step goal? Yes or no? Did you hit your sleep goal? Yes or no? Did you hit your unplugged goal? Yes or no? Did you hit your food goal? Yes or no?” he told US Weekly. 'To the extent that you check yes, it gives you this sense of accomplishment at the end of every day.”

To monitor her progress daily, Pasternak recommended Jess start wearing a FitBit.

“Shortly after she gave birth, as soon as we got medical clearance to start walking, we had a daily step goal on her Fitbit,” he continued. “More of a limit if anything because we didn’t want to do too much.”

She started off with a goal of 6,000 steps a day (around 4km) which is a little over what the average adult would hit. After a while, they bumped this up to 8,000-10,000 steps. Then again to 12,000, though Pasternak said sometimes “she even did 14,000 steps a day.” (That’s more than 11km, FYI.)

Full disclosure: Jess did workout most days too, but they put “a lot more emphasis on the behaviours outside of the gym. “We did the workout stuff, but that was later on,” Pasternak explained. What were these healthy habits, you ask?

“Number one, hit at least 12,000 steps on her Fitbit,” Pasternak reiterated. “The second is try and get at least seven hours of quality sleep at night, not just quantity. The third was unplug from technology at least an hour a day. The fourth was follow the meal plan, the Body Reset Diet principles and a low sugar diet. Then the fifth, every other day, a short, fun workout.”

Jess also made sure to avoid alcohol (coz uneccessary calories.)

“She’s not drinking and losing all that weight. That’s for sure,” Pasternak said. “She’s living a healthy, balanced life.”
