One of the most common questions I’m asked is how I keep my skin healthy and glowing. Our external appearance really is reflective of what’s happening inside, which is why it’s essential to adopt a holistic approach to skincare. 

If your body is stressed, tired and lacking in nutrients, that will be reflected in dryness, blemishes and other common skin conditions. Here are my top tips for getting glowing skin from the inside-out.

1. Eat a wholefood diet

For skin health, focus on enjoying good fats, proteins, greens and healthy grains at each meal. Limit your intake of processed, packaged and pre-prepared foods. I have plenty of meal ideas on my website.

2. Love good fats 

Enjoy foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, avocado, coconut oil, nuts (especially walnuts) and seeds (such as chia seeds and flaxseeds). I also recommend taking a good-quality fish oil supplement every day.

3. Look after your gut

Taking care of your gut health is so important for maintaining healthy skin. A daily prebiotic is a great start, as is drinking water with a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and eating probiotic-rich foods.

4. Limit inflammatory foods

When it comes to our diet, I’ve found there are three main culprits that contribute to problematic skin: gluten, sugar and dairy. I recommend trialling a two-week elimination and seeing whether your skin improves during that time. I also recommend limiting your intake of caffeine to one coffee a day and reducing alcohol to two glasses on the weekend.

5. Take care of your liver

This aids your hormonal health, which in turn helps your skin. Our hormones are processed through the liver so when it’s overloaded, we can experience imbalanced hormones. I have a seasonal cleanse available in the JSHealth App, which helps to support the liver and other organs.

6. Try supplementing

There are several important minerals that promote cellular renewal and help to support other bodily processed. Minerals such as selenium, magnesium, zinc and iodine are great beauty boosters.

7. Stay hydrated

I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but water intake is crucial for glowing skin. Drinking two litres of water each day helps to flush the body and nourish your cells.

8. Take care of your stress levels 

If you’re not rested on the inside, it’s going to show on the outside. Ensure you get eight hours of sleep, manage your stress, exercise moderately, set technology boundaries and practise deep belly breathing.

9. Eat your greens

Leafy greens and green veggies are a beauty powerhouse. They’re rich in vitamin E, which helps to fight free radicals and other toxins. At lunch and dinner, try filling half of your plate with greens, ¼ complex carbohydrates, ¼ protein and a portion of healthy fats.

10. Beat those blemishes

My secret weapon is using a bit of apple cider vinegar dabbed onto cotton wool. Leave it on overnight and you’ll see that blemishes are drastically reduced.
