Edwina Bartholomew On The Emotional Challenges Of Life With A Baby

by | Aug 27, 2020

She’s interviewed countless major celebs on live telly and spent years at the helm of Australia’s number one brekkie show. Still, nothing could prepare Edwina Bartholomew for the demands of her toughest job yet: motherhood.

One month ago today, the 36-year-old and her husband Neil Varcoe welcomed their daughter, Molly Matilda to the world. And, if her latest Instagram post is anything to go by, it’s already been a wild ride.

“You are a delight, Molly Matilda,” she captioned a snap of the pair enjoying a cuddle. “Sure, the full throttle crying is not so delightful but thankfully that’s pretty rare. You just get hangry like your Dad.”

“The first 48 hours of motherhood were challenging in a way I wasn’t really prepared for,” she continued. “I was a total mess, actually. I burst into tears in the kitchen when our midwife arrived, I burst into tears when @neilwrites went to sleep and I couldn’t, and a few more times, just because.”

Now that they’ve reached the four-week mark, Edwina admits the family is finally finding their “groove.”

“My goals have changed. Have a shower each day is now number one. Ticked that box. Wash my hair, occasionally. I accept I may never pee with the door closed again and it will be a while before I can eat a plate of food without cutting it up onto small pieces. None of my old clothes fit and, although spirits are high, my boobs are most certainly not.”

Despite the period of adjustment, she reflects on the past four weeks as “pretty magical.”

“At times I have looked at you with your Dad and felt like I would explode with love. It could still happen. Be warned. I’ll try not to embarrass you when it does,” she concluded. “Don’t grow up too quickly. Your Mum xx.”

Within hours of being shared, Edwina’s post has racked up more than 27,000 likes and hundreds of comments from sympathetic parents.

“So well said. It’s such a crazy roller coaster ride but worth every minute. Just when you think you’ve got it sorted everything changes until you get it sorted once again. There’s nothing quite like the shock of becoming a new mum and those baby blues are absolutely a thing! Hormones ????,” one comment read.

“Remember to be kind to yourself. Being Mum is awesome, but tough- you’re doing great. Enjoy all the cuddles, they grow so quick,” said another.

Even her co-star Larry Emdur weighed in with words of wisdom, writing:

“Just Byoooooooooootiful @edwina_b . And I still pee with the door open, not because I’m worried about my children just ‘coz I’m at an age where I forget to close it xxxxx ❤️❤️❤️❤️”
