Do You Have The Body ‘Blahs’?

Your gut could be trying to tell you something. - by Rachel de Hossan

Do You Have The Body ‘Blahs’?

When the cooler months arrive, so does the temptation to get cosy, stay in and comfort eat. It’s the time of year for pastas and hearty ragus, second helpings – and don’t get us started on dessert! While the occasional indulgence is fun, overdoing it can wreak havoc on your digestion. If you’re feeling a bit ‘blah’, we’ve found three reasons why you could be feeling ordinary, and how you can get back on track to feeling good.

1. You’ve checked out of your workout

We don’t need to tell Women’s Health readers that exercise is essential for the mind and body. But you’re only human, and as the weather gets cooler it can test even the strongest will to put the trainers on early in the morning. So, change up your workout! Revive your neglected gym membership or sign yourself up and workout indoors! You’ll challenge yourself to something new and warm yourself up at the same time.

2. Your diet’s out of whack

It’s the time of year when bad habits creep in, such as dialling in a pizza if it’s too cold to go out. Not only will your pants get tighter, it can also negatively impact your health. Takeaway food is often loaded with sugar, salt and saturated fats. These foods may leave you feeling sluggish and fatigued. Instead, go for a varied diet of fresh fruit and veggies, lean protein and dairy to give your body what it needs to function properly.

3. Your tummy’s not quite right

If you’re doing all the right things and you’re still a bit off-colour, you might find something you’re eating or drinking simply isn’t agreeing with you. Whether you’ve been diagnosed with a food intolerance or just find your digestion is a bit sensitive, it’s a good idea to try to work out what’s causing it, either by removing and reintroducing foods one by one and monitoring your reaction, or seeing your GP or a dietician to help you figure it out.

Lactose intolerance or sensitivity is an example of a common digestive problem that can cause people to feel bloated or heavy in the stomach. We asked Accredited Practising Dietician, nutrition blogger and Zymil ambassador Chloe McLeod to give us the rundown.

“Lactose intolerance occurs when there is a lack of production of the enzyme lactase, which breaks down lactose,” Chloe says. “This causes lactose to not absorb properly and ferment in the gut, which in turn most commonly causes bloating, wind and diarrhoea.”

While lactose intolerance can’t be cured, Chloe says an individual’s sensitivity may change over time. “You can reduce your symptoms of lactose intolerance by reducing consumption of foods such as milk, yoghurt, cream and custard that contain lactose,” she says. And the good news is, dairy lovers don’t have to give up their smoothies, choccy milks and custard – they only need to make the switch to Zymil. “Zymil is a great option as it is a lactose-free product that contains all the other goodness of dairy milk and tastes like regular milk,” says Chloe.

With a full range of milks from full cream to skim, yoghurt, cream and custard, there’s no reason milk lovers will ever have to go without all the goodness and flavour they love again.
