You’re currently getting ready for the 2020 Olympics - what does your training regime look like now we’re officially one year out?
We are heading over to Tokyo for training camp this week! Which is super fitting being one year out from the Olympics. Once we get bac,k we will be training Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and some Saturdays. We have a lot of work to do and we’re going to train hard to get to where we need to be for 2020.
Can you talk us through your day on plate?
Avocado and Vegemite on 1 x piece of toast with 2 x poached eggs
Banana or piece of fruit
Sandwich or salad or wrap
Post gym snack:
YoPRO pouch or pot
Meat with salad or veggies
What’s your go-to post-match meal?
Sometimes we’ll go as a team and grab an ice cream.
Rugby isn’t just about physical endurance but mental strength too, how do you keep motivated?
I have a very competitive nature, so I always want to be the best and know that I’ve given it my everything. The other motivator is my teammates. The girls I get to do it with are my actual friends and we all push and support each other, which makes a huge difference.
You were part of the Seven’s team that won gold at Rio, how has this effected your confidence heading in to Tokyo?
It doesn’t make that much of a difference, as we are a completely new group of girls and there is four years in between. We look at how well prepared we were for Rio, and it’s motivating because we know exactly where we need to be.
How do you deal with game-day nerves?
I just try to prepare as best as I can. If I know that I’ve put the work in then I know I have done everything possible, which settles any nerves I may have.
Are there any specific bands/music that never fail to fire you up?
We normally have one playlist going. At the moment a lot of the girls like country music so we have been listening to that!
Do you have any pre-match superstitions/rituals?
Em Cherry is obviously away at the moment, but her, Alicia Quirk and I always high five before we run on the field.
What do you do in your down time to take the pressure off?
My partner and I own a farm in Queensland, so whenever we have a bit of time off training we head up there. We love it there and it is one of the only places we can fully switch off!
What has been your biggest struggle as a young athlete?
Achieving pretty much the highest success at such a young age was amazing but also challenging. All I want to do now is experience it all over again.
What's been your biggest learning throughout your career so far?
I think I’ve learnt how quickly things can change, and that literally anything can happen. I know how important it is to dust yourself off and move on and not dwell on anything.
There’s so much buzz around women in sport right now. Are there any in particular who inspire you?
It’s an exciting time for women in sport and I find them all so inspiring. Women who play touch football still need to pay their own way to play for Australia. Before I started Sevens I played touch football, and it’s so inspiring to see the women I grew up playing with still working so hard for the love of the game.
