Cardi B Wants To Remove The Pressure On New Mums To ‘Snap Back’ Post Pregnancy

Rumours surrounding the star’s post-pregnancy body reveal societal pressure on mums to immediately return to their pre-pregnancy body are still rampant.

For decades now, women and men alike have talked about childbirth as something of a miracle. Certainly, the experience is one that serves to highlight the remarkable strength of the female body and mind, our ability to nurture and grow, to withstand immense pain and suffering. But despite the celebration of womanhood and childbirth alike, social conditioning has turned what should be an incredible experience into one fraught with pressure and external scrutiny. While it’s one thing to see your body change before your eyes, it’s another to have to endure constant criticism and comment, particularly when it comes to the post-pregnancy body. It’s something Cardi B is particularly frustrated about and she’s now using her platform to speak out against the pressure of “snapping back” into shape.

After recently welcoming her second child with fellow rapper Offset, Cardi B found herself the subject of numerous rumours about her post-baby body. The rumours suggested Cardi had undergone cosmetic surgery post-birth to help her achieve the body she’s known for. In a series of clips posted to her Instagram stories titled ‘Girl Talk’, the rapper addressed the rumours and shared details of her labour. Not one to shy away from revealing her true thoughts, Cardi wanted to keep things real for her fans and followers when it comes to her postpartum body, showing the difference that angles can make.

Speaking to her 111 million followers, Cardi revealed just some of the ways that her body had changed during pregnancy. “I got some amazing hips due to my gorgeous son, because he was sitting so low,” she explained. “You know when your baby is low, your hips spread…But everybody’s just like, ‘Cardi, you so snatched. What do you do? You did lip? You had a tummy tuck?’”

Cardi added, “You cannot do surgery after you give birth, especially me. I lost so much blood guys, one day I’m gonna talk to you about my crazy ass delivery, but anyways I looked snatched, especially when I take these paparazzi pictures when I’m ‘like this’…but I’m really like this.”

Cardi then proceeded to turn to the side to show her body from a different angle, illustrating the power to change body shape and public perception simply by posing differently to angle different parts of the body. “My skin is still loose and I still got a little pouchy pouch right here, and if I showed you my back fat…but f*ck it!”

Frustrated with the idea that women should be expected to return to their pre-pregnancy bodies immediately, Cardi shared a powerful message to push back against the societal pressures so many women feel following birth. She stressed to her followers that it’s important to “take your time,” adding, “It’s really hard dealing with kids, especially when you [have] two kids.”
