Billie Eilish Reveals The Emotional Reason She Dyed Her Hair Blonde

A new hair colour is always more than simply wanting to change things up, and for Billie Eilish going blonde meant gaining freedom.

For those who have been in lockdown, few things are missed quite like the incredible hands and skills of your hairdresser. Zoom cameras are now well and truly switched off, a testament to the regrowth that has taken over our locks. It makes us think back to the days we could stroll into a hairdresser with wilful abandon, request a transformative cut, and more often than not, look into the mirror at the end of the styling session fighting back tears, only to sob hysterically in the car as we mutter “it’ll grow back, it’ll grow back.”

But as anyone who has ever done a big chop or colour change can understand, these requests often come from a place deep within ourselves. These aren’t requests one makes simply because they want a change or something novel, these are changes that speak to a part of our soul, changes that shed the past and present a new path forward, one that’s novel, at times scary, but ultimately rewarding.

For Billie Eilish, such was the case. For years, the singer was known for her black locks with neon green roots. Her incredible vocals made her one of the most sought-after singers of our time, with Billie fronting magazine covers and fashion campaigns with the same ease at which she performed in front of hundreds of thousands of adoring fans. She became synonymous with style, a sort of grungy vibe with oversized sweats and tees that saw her challenge the conventional mould and expectations of young female music stars. It was something of a shock then, when she emerged earlier this year in March revealing a bob, fringe and blonde locks.

While some were quick to suggest the transformation was merely a reflection of wider trends, Billie herself seemed to echo such sentiments in early interviews. On the Ellen show, she said about her new hairstyle, “It was me with whatever hair colour I had, and they just edited blonde hair on me, and I was like, ‘It’s so sick, I want it.’”

But in a recent interview with Elle magazine, Billie has since revealed the real reason that inspired the change. Speaking about her acid green hairstyle, she told the publication: “I couldn’t go anywhere with that hair because it was so obviously me. I wanted anonymity.”

It was only when she went blonde that Billie discovered the freedom that most her age take for granted. “I went to a park with a friend, and I was like, ‘No, I can’t take off my hood!’ I was terrified of the paparazzi and these stalkers I’ve had. But my friend was like, ‘Don’t worry: you’re okay. Nothing’s gonna happen.’ And I took my hood off, and I felt like a new person.”

It’s a heartbreaking reminder of the reality of fame, particularly for someone who has reached the kind of mega-stardom that Billie enjoys today. Even so, she assures fans that she hasn’t changed, even if her hair colour has. “I’ve had different-coloured hair and vibes for everything I’ve ever done. I wanted this album to have its own thing.”

She added, “The other day I posted a video from when I had green hair, and I saw people go, ‘I miss this Billie, the green-haired Billie. I’m still the same person. I’m not just different Barbies with different heads.”
