6 Of The Biggest Moments For Women In Sport In 2019

What 👏🏻A 👏🏻Year👏🏻 - by Lucy Bode
  • 16 Oct 2019

Women in sport is on the upward trajectory, that’s an indisputable fact. But while there were so many moments in 2019 that gave us goosebumps, we’ve rounded up six that will continue to inspire the masses for years to come.

1. Ash Barty taking out the French Open, June 9, 2019

Ash showed the nation what true champions are made of when she became the first Australian in 46 years to win the French Open. Following in the footsteps of her idol Evonne Goolagong Cawley, the victory helped secure her spot as world #1.

2. Ellyse Perry hitting 1000 runs in T20I, July 29, 2019

Top ranked all-rounder Ellyse made sporting history when she became the first cricketer of either gender to reach the all-round milestone of 1000 runs and 100 wickets in the Twenty20 Internationals.

3. Sam Kerr’s hat trick, June 19, 2019

Leading her team to victory at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, Matildas captain Sam kicked all four goals and became the first Australian – male or female – to score a hat-trick in a final.

4. Steph Gilmore’s seventh world title win, Nov 27, 2018

Steph took out her seventh ASP/WSL world surfing title after US surfer Lakey Peterson bowed out early at the Maui Pro. The win means she equals Layne Beachley's long-standing record.

5. Tayla Harris taking a stand against sexism in sport, March 2019

After an impressive photo of Tayla in full-flight attracted a flood of offensive remarks online, the Carlton AFLW player shut down trolls writing, “My hamstring is okay, but sexist and derogatory comments aren’t.” Her words ignited an important – and overdue - conversation around sexism in sport.

6. Tia-Clair Toomey winning the CrossFit Games, August 2, 2019

After smashing the competition to snare a gold medal at the 2019 CrossFit Games, Tia became the first female in history to earn the title of “Fittest on Earth” three years in a row.
