"Given the twin conference structure and that the finals series was not completed, the AFL Commission has determined no premiership will be awarded for this season, following a recommendation from the AFL Executive."
The news comes as the coronavirus outbreak continues to spread across the country, with more than 1,300 confirmed cases at the time of writing. Still, Seven sports broadcaster Andrew Maher suggests the rest of the AFLW season should have been put on hold until the outbreak could be contained.
"This afternoon's news will hit the remaining teams in the #AFLW season like a sledgehammer," he wrote on Twitter. The final four shaped as terrific contests. A broad perspective now needed, however. So proud of all involved.
"One final thought: given the men’s comp is on hold, why not the women’s comp too? Only three games left," he added in a follow up post.
"They observe the same protocols moving forward as the men. Give them a fortnight’s notice before resumption. Play the season out. Why not?"
Hear, hear, Andy.
