Raise your hand if you’ve ever worn your sweat-soaked gym kit multiple times before giving it a rinse.
There’s no way to sugar coat it: it’s a pretty darn dirty habit. But as it turns out, a surprising number of us are guilty as charged.
According to research from fitness and yoga brand Sculptmode, one in three people are partial to donning the same active wear up to 2-3 days in a row, with 11 per cent claiming “no spare time” as their go-to excuse.
Another popular reason for doing so? “I didn’t get too sweaty,” closely followed by “I had no other clean items.”
So, what’s the big deal? As long as your stuff passes the sniff test it should be good to go, right?
“It’s OK to re-wear the clothes if the sessions are on the same day, or even an evening session followed by a morning session,” Sculptmode founder Himmat Dhana explains.
“But we wouldn’t recommend leaving them for a couple of days – you might not think you worked up a sweat but that doesn’t mean you didn’t.”
As bacteria builds up over time, a hot machine wash is the only way to be sure you’re getting rid of any hidden nasties lurking in the fabric.
“Wash your clothes on a high wash of above 60°C each time,” Dr Lisa Ackerley (aka, The Hygiene Doctor) told NetDoctor.
“To ensure that you are killing the bacteria, you could also use an anti-bacterial laundry cleaner if you are washing below 60°C.
