Rethink your bedroom
Sleep hygiene is about more than kicking the TV out of the bedroom. It’s developing a nightly routine that signals to your brain you are winding down for the day and getting ready to sleep. Having a warm bath or shower at night can help, as your body temperature drops afterwards in the same way it does when you fall asleep. Eat an early-ish dinner so you won’t be digesting pizza at 9pm. Switching off your electronic devices an hour before bed, turning the lights out at the same time each night and keeping your room as dark and quiet as possible (use a sleep mask and white noise to help) can all help you get better-quality sleep.
Get a sleep check-up
Daytime sleepiness can also be caused by snoring (yours or your partner’s) or sleep apnoea which, if left untreated, can put you at higher risk of diabetes, stroke, depression, poor memory and concentration, and affect your sex drive. Amcal Pharmacy offers a complete Sleep Health Check with a highly trained pharmacist who can assess if you are at risk of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). If you are at risk, they can also recommend undergoing an overnight sleep study at home. Amcal provides all the equipment you need for this and results are sent to a sleep physician for review and recommendations. Book your Sleep Health Check at Amcal today.
Check your shopping trolley
If it’s heavy on processed foods and energy drinks, and skimpy on fresh fruits and vegies, chances are your diet is stealing your energy. To get back on track, boost your intake of iron-rich foods: lean beef, dark green leafy vegetables, nuts, eggs, tofu, kidney and beans. Vitamin B foods are also essential for energy, so load up on salmon, milk, lentils, chickpeas, chicken, turkey and plain yoghurt. And buy a fancy new water bottle to remind yourself to drink more H20, as that 3pm slump can often be a sign of dehydration.
Review your medicine cabinet
Some medications, including cold and flu, weight loss, allergy and anxiety medications can cause tiredness. You can talk to a pharmacist at Amcal for a medicine review.
Your gym swipe card is growing cobwebs
If you’ve dropped the (medicine) ball on your gym workouts, going back to your F45 class, or even going for a brisk walk, can help kick your tiredness to the curb. Regular exercise boosts oxygen to your tissues, and a study from the University of Georgia found a single bout of exercise consistently increases feelings of energy. Jump to it!
