You know the meme of Kylie Jenner basically wearing a doona, and that being all of us as soon as the weather drops below 20 degrees? Well, it will live on forever. Why? Because no matter how prepared you are, winter hits like a tonne of (icy) bricks and has us digging deep for our thick doonas and winter pyjamas.
So, to get you even more prepared as we head into the thick of the cold season, we've found some of our favourite electric blankets to keep you warm and snug.
Firstly, we should note that there are two types of electric blankets: ones that you chuck on like a throw, and others that fit under your sheet on your bed. For people who are hot sleepers and don't really need something that warm, skip the heated mattress pad and opt for a flannelette sheet instead. But if you tend to wake up freezing during winter, however, an undersheet pad or mattress topper might be a good investment.
As for the blanket, that's the one you want if you need something that can be moved around.
Not only can you chuck it over your shoulder while you're working from home, but you can wrap up after a tough workout, too (heat increases circulation which can help you to heal and recover from exercise or injury) - just make sure it's washable.
Can you wash an electric blanket?
Yes. All the electric blankets featured in our round-up are machine washable.
Are electric blankets safe?
Yes, don't worry – unlike older electric blankets, all new models these days have auto-shutoff functions so they're not left on for hours at a time, meaning there's minimal risk of an accident happening. Just avoid using them with latex toppers, memory foam toppers or foam products.
Pregnant women can also be at risk of overheating with extended use, so we'd recommend not using a heated blanket if you're expecting. Don't use them on babies, either.
